An ios mobile app that helps roommates keep track of chores.

Project Brief

The design challenge for this project was to solve a fellow classmate’s burning problem. Since the challenge was broad, I wore my consulting hat in vetting out the problem. With some carefully crafted open ended questioning, I was able to uncover what kept her up at night. The core of the issue was that both her and her husband had busy schedules, two dogs, and one cat, leaving household chores to the wayside.

The Solution

A mobile app that fairly distributes household chores among roommates. And so, Task Share was born!

My Role

Lead UX Designer. Designed and delivered solution from end to end. From problem discovery, brainstorming, problem definition, research, solution definition, prototyping, testing, iterating, research again, prototyping again, testing again, iterating, to design deliverables.

Persona

Britney was inspired by the respondents who took the user survey. A woman in her mid-thirties that lives with one roommate, her significant other.

Before jumping into design ideation, I organized my thoughts by mapping out the workflows. Building the user flow, I found that I needed to add filtering signifiers to all the calendar screens.

Prototype Screens

Prototype

Task Share makes it easy to split chores among roommates. It calculates roommates’ preferences regarding chores and takes that into account when distributing tasks. Roommates can see all tasks for the house and remind roommates through the app to complete their tasks. In the calendar view you can also set days when you are out of town or busy so you will not be assigned tasks for those days.

Reflections

Reflections

Digging into the research, busy schedules and communication were recurring themes. I took this into account by adding reminder notifications, lists that make it easy to know who is responsible for what chores, and a feature where you can tell the app when you are not available to pitch in.

Next Steps

I would like to explore an activity page that summarizes roommates’ activities. Roommates will also be able to comment, and like activities on this page. I would also like to explore a Roommate tips section and reporting section.
